Musk: New battery tech could make US$25,000 EV possible in three years
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said late September that cheaper batteries made in-house by the automaker should let them bring a US$25,000 EV to market by 2023.
Musk hosted a live presentation he called “Battery Day” September 22, where he laid out the plan to bring the more affordable, fully autonomous Tesla to customers “in about three years time.”
“This has always been our dream, to make an affordable electric car,” the exec said, but in order to get there, Tesla’d needs to refine its latest battery tech: new cylindrical cells that produce a claimed five times more energy than conventional batteries, offering six times more power and 16 per cent better range.
